All incoming calls come to my desk if the caller doesn’t have an extension or name that they know. Anyways, I just got a call from a guy claiming to be with the chamber of commerce and he had our previous (2013) address so I updated it with our newish one, he then asked who the manager at this location was. I said it was our CEO, as this was our headquarters, but didn’t give him a name. He didn’t ask for a name, but just hung up without saying a word...

Turns out this is a pretty common thing and it seems to be some sort of scam, but I can’t figure out why or what or how. The only information he asked for comes up on the side in a google search (including our updated address. Furthermore, so much more information is available on the internet that doesn’t require calling anyone.

Seems like they are datamining in a sense. They now have an active phone number, address and can likely tie it to an email address as well.
They can then sell these numbers/addresses to Spam Bots or Salesmen (the unsavory kind).

But they could get all of these things from our website/Google...

Yup, but they confirmed it. Lots of defunct businesses.
At least, this is my reasoning on why they are doing this. I could be wrong.
